Biography - Professor Carl Rowbottom
Carl is the Director of Physics at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Honorary Visiting Professor in the Physics Department of the University of Liverpool. He enjoys a broad leadership role within the Radiation Services Division, managing and supporting a multi-disciplinary environment of clinical scientists, therapeutic and diagnostic radiographers, clinical and engineering technologists.
Carl has a diverse educational background that includes a PhD in Radiotherapy Physics from the Institute of Cancer Research and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Chester. He is a state registered clinical scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), registered as a Higher Specialist Scientist in Medical Physics with the Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS), and recognised as a Medical Physics Expert in the UK (RPA2000). In addition, he has also worked with the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) as an international expert in patient safety in radiotherapy.
He is Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Programme Director for the MSc in Clinical Science (Medical Physics) at the University of Liverpool. He maintains a keen interest in developing leadership skills of medical physicists from an early stage in their career and leads the Professional Foundations module of the MSc. He has been a keen supporter of the Higher Specialist Scientist training programme of the National School of Healthcare science to develop physicists’ skills for consultant level roles and was the Lead Examiner (Radiotherapy Physics) for the Independent Assessment of Professional Skills (IAPS) from 2019-2023.
Carl has maintained an active role within the UK’s Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine over his career, previously serving as chair of their Radiotherapy Special Interest Group (2005-2009), chair of the Radiotherapy Professional Standards Panel (2015-2017), and Deputy Director of its Professional and Standards Council (2021-2023).
He is currently a Trustee and Director of IPEM’s Professional and Standards Council and continues to represent IPEM on the UK Health Security Agency’s Patient Safety in Radiotherapy steering committee.
Carl has a wide range of research interests including application of artificial intelligence in radiotherapy, treatment planning techniques, failure modes and effect analysis, small-field dosimetry, patient views and shared decision making. He has a keen interest in the large scale adoption of best-practice techniques to advance clinical practice as well as the application of safety science in healthcare. He has published over 120 journal and conference papers, 1 book chapter and 2 patents. He has given over 50 invited talks around the world on a variety of topics.
